Abdominoplasty

Abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to improve and restore the contours and aesthetic proportions of the abdomen and its anterior wall, typically after pregnancy or significant weight loss.

The Essence of the Operation

Abdominoplasty, commonly known as a tummy tuck, is performed by removing excess skin and adipose tissue from the anterior wall of the abdomen. There are several options for performing this operation and making incisions; for example, a scar from a previous cesarean section can be used. This procedure can also correct the separation of the rectus abdominis muscles.

Duration

The duration of the operation is approximately 2-5 hours.

Pain Relief

The operation is performed under general anesthesia.

Hospitalization

The duration of hospitalization is determined by the operating surgeon, taking into account the patient's physical condition after surgery.

Possible Side Effects

After surgery, patients may experience some soreness or hypersensitivity in the surgical area, along with swelling and bruising. Initially, the patient may feel discomfort when the skin is stretched in the incision area.

Possible complications

Possible complications include the risk of infection, the likelihood of hematomas, bleeding from the wound edges (depending on blood clotting), wound suture dehiscence which may necessitate repeat surgery, pulmonary embolism, and the formation of keloid scars.

Rehabilitation Period

The minimum recovery period after surgery is 2 weeks. Most patients can return to work 14-28 days after surgery. Strenuous activities are permitted after one to one and a half months, but only with the surgeon’s approval. Scar healing varies individually, taking from 3 months to 1 year after surgery. Wearing a special corset is mandatory after abdominoplasty.

Results

The results of the operation are long-lasting; however, pregnancy and weight gain can cause repeated changes in the shape and contours of the abdomen.
